Dwayne P. Wiggins Foundation Launches to Honor Music Legend’s Legacy and Expand Access to Music Education for Oakland Youth

OAKLAND, CA — March 2026 — The newly established Dwayne P. Wiggins Foundation officially launched on March 4, 2026, bringing together music educators, community leaders, youth advocates, and family members to celebrate the life and legacy of Dwayne P. Wiggins, one of Oakland’s most beloved musical innovators and champions of youth.

The event marked a moment of remembrance just days before the one-year anniversary of Wiggins’ passing on March 7, 2025. Guests gathered at Lake Chalet in Oakland to honor Wiggins’ lifelong commitment to music, mentorship, and community impact.

Foundation President and Founder Veleta Savannah spoke at the event, sharing the organization’s vision for expanding access to music education for Oakland students. Attendees also experienced a special live performance by Tony! Toni! Toné! — the legacy continues, making the event both a tribute and a celebration of his lasting legacy.

Wiggins, a founding member of Tony! Toni! Toné! Was widely known not only for his musical influence but also for his deep investment in the next generation of artists and leaders. Through programs such as Tony’s School of Music, he created opportunities for young people in Oakland to learn, create, and grow through music.

The Foundation continues that mission, building pathways for Oakland youth to access music education and opportunities that affirm the power of music as both protection and possibility.

“Dwayne believed deeply in the power of music to transform lives,” said Savannah. “Honoring his wishes, the Foundation will carry that belief forward, ensuring that every young person in Oakland has access to music.”

In June 2026, the Foundation will open the first round of scholarship applications to students ages 5-18 who either live in or attend school in Oakland. Scholarships of up to $2,500 will be awarded annually. For more information, visit www.dpwmusicfoundation.org.
